Is SPC Flooring Waterproof? Everything You Need to Know
SPC flooring is one of the most popular waterproof flooring options for busy homes, rental properties and light commercial spaces. Its rigid core, vinyl surface and protective wear layer make it highly resistant to spills, splashes and everyday moisture — but waterproof at plank level doesn't automatically mean the whole installation is watertight.
Is SPC Flooring Really Waterproof?
Yes. SPC flooring is waterproof at plank level because its rigid stone polymer composite core doesn't absorb water or swell the way many wood-based flooring materials do. The important distinction is that the SPC plank itself is waterproof, while the complete floor still relies on correct installation, properly joined planks and a suitable subfloor — water can still potentially reach beneath the flooring through perimeter gaps or damaged joints, so an SPC floor shouldn't be treated as a substitute for proper waterproofing where this is required.
This makes SPC waterproof flooring a practical choice for:
Kitchens
Bathrooms
Utility rooms and entrance halls
Dining areas and rental properties
What Is SPC Flooring Made From?
SPC stands for Stone Polymer Composite, also commonly referred to as Stone Plastic Composite. The rigid core is manufactured from a combination of minerals and polymers to create a dense, stable flooring plank. Unlike flooring with a wood-based core, the SPC core doesn't rely on timber fibres that can absorb water and swell. A typical plank is built up in layers:
Surface Layers
Look & Protection
- Protective wear layer
- Decorative design layer

- Rigid SPC core
- Click-locking profile

- Optional integrated underlay
What Makes SPC Flooring Waterproof?
The waterproof performance comes from several parts of the plank working together.
Rigid SPC core — doesn't absorb normal surface moisture, so the plank won't swell simply because water is spilled onto it.
Vinyl decorative layer — gives the wood or stone-effect look while forming part of the water-resistant structure.
Protective wear layer — a transparent layer guarding against foot traffic, marks, stains and scratches.
Click-locking system — interlocking edges create close, consistent joints without bonding every plank to the subfloor.
Waterproof Does Not Mean Watertight
This is an important distinction when buying waterproof SPC flooring. The planks themselves can be waterproof without the entire installed floor forming a completely watertight barrier. Water may still find its way underneath the floor through expansion gaps around the perimeter, doorways, pipe penetrations, damaged joints, edges around fixtures, or large leaks and flooding.
The subfloor underneath may also react differently to water — a timber subfloor can potentially swell, deteriorate or develop mould if water remains trapped beneath the flooring, while concrete doesn't swell in the same way but can still develop moisture problems.
Kitchens, Bathrooms & Wet Areas
Kitchens
Everyday Spills
Handles spilled drinks, cooking splashes, wet cleaning and water around sinks without soaking into the rigid core. Spills should still be cleaned up promptly, particularly around appliances and units.
Bathrooms
Check the Spec
A good option when the product is suitable and installed to the manufacturer's requirements — but not automatically a replacement for tanking or other waterproofing where that's required.
Wet Area Attention Points
Perimeter Detail
Pay particular attention around baths, showers, toilets, basins, pipework and the perimeter of the room, and always check the manufacturer's installation and warranty conditions first.
SPC Flooring vs Waterproof Laminate
SPC flooring and waterproof or water-resistant laminate are constructed very differently. SPC uses a rigid mineral and polymer-based core, while traditional laminate generally uses a wood-fibre-based core with a decorative layer and protective coating. Some modern laminate products offer impressive water resistance, but the underlying construction is still different. Where regular exposure to moisture is expected, SPC is often the more straightforward choice because the core itself is waterproof.
When comparing the two, consider core construction, water resistance, wear layer, installation method, room suitability and manufacturer warranty. Standard laminate should generally be treated more cautiously in rooms where standing water or regular moisture may occur.
Where Does Waterproof SPC Flooring Work Best?
One of the biggest advantages of SPC click flooring is its versatility — the appearance of natural timber with the practical benefits of waterproof vinyl flooring.
Kitchens — handles everyday spills and regular cleaning with ease.
Utility rooms — copes well with water around washing machines, sinks and external doors.
Entrance halls — a durable, easy-to-clean surface for wet shoes, muddy boots and umbrellas.
Bathrooms — a practical solution for many bathrooms when correctly specified and installed.
Living & dining areas — can run through into adjoining spaces for a consistent open-plan finish.
Rental properties — one flooring type used across several rooms, reducing the need to switch coverings.
How to Protect Waterproof SPC Flooring
Wipe up standing water — reduces the chance of moisture reaching the perimeter or underneath the flooring.
Use entrance mats — removes water, dirt, grit and sand from footwear and reduces surface scratching.
Use suitable cleaning products — follow the manufacturer's instructions and avoid harsh or abrasive products.
Protect against scratches — use pads beneath furniture and lift rather than drag heavy objects.
What Should You Look for When Buying Waterproof SPC Flooring?
Not all SPC click flooring has the same specification. When comparing options, look beyond the "waterproof" label to the details that determine real-world performance.
Core thickness — contributes to overall strength and dimensional stability.
Wear layer — a thicker layer suits busy homes and higher-traffic environments.
Integrated underlay — simplifies installation and improves feel and acoustic performance.
Click system and warranty — determines how securely planks connect; always check the warranty terms rather than the headline duration alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is SPC flooring waterproof?
Yes. SPC flooring has a waterproof rigid core, making it an excellent choice for kitchens, utility rooms, entrance halls, rental properties and many bathroom installations. However, waterproof flooring shouldn't be confused with a completely watertight flooring system — correct installation, subfloor preparation and maintenance still matter.
Can water get underneath SPC flooring?
It can, even though the planks themselves are waterproof. Water may reach beneath the floor through expansion gaps, doorways, pipe penetrations, damaged joints or large leaks, so proper installation and prompt attention to any leaks remain important.
Is SPC flooring suitable for bathrooms?
It can be, when the product is suitable for the application and installed to the manufacturer's requirements. It shouldn't be treated as a substitute for tanking or other waterproofing where that's needed, and particular attention should be paid around baths, showers and pipework.
How is SPC flooring different from waterproof laminate?
SPC uses a rigid mineral and polymer-based core, while laminate generally uses a wood-fibre-based core with a protective coating. Even water-resistant laminate is built differently underneath, so where regular moisture is expected, SPC is usually the more straightforward choice.
